In recent years, harmful trace elements in coal gangue have become one of the research hotspots in the fields of coal geology, environment and energy utilization. This paper systematically summarizes the current research status of harmful trace elements in coal gangue. The spatial distribution of harmful trace elements in coal gangue is uneven, and the distribution characteristics of each element are also different. The contents of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, V and other elements are higher. There are many research methods for the occurrence of harmful trace elements in coal gangue. The most commonly used methods are Tessier sequential chemical extraction method and BCR sequential chemical extraction method. The occurrence forms of harmful trace elements in coal gangue are exchangeable state, carbonate crystalline state, iron and manganese oxide state, organic binding state and residual state, among which the residual state is in the majority. The long-term stacking of coal gangue causes harmful trace elements to adversely affect the environment and pollute the atmosphere, water and soil. The distribution and specific chemical forms of harmful trace elements in coal gangue and the environmental effects of harmful trace elements in coal gangue will still be the main direction of future research in this field.
