Polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate surfactants are a novel type of surfactants, of which a polyoxyethylene chain is embedded between hydrophilic ionic and hydrophobic group tail to meet the needs of tertiary oil recovery. According to the domestic and foreign related literatures, the surface activity properties, foam properties, emulsifying properties, antiscaling performance, thermal stability and salt resistance, and the application prospect of this kind of surfactants in the exploitation of crude oil were discussed. It was pointed that further development of the polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate surfactants should focus on the following aspects which were designing and developing the green synthesis routes of polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate surfactant, strengthening the performance of the hydrophobic groups type and the EO number of the surfactants, seeking for better comprehensive performance surfactants, synergizing the polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate surfactants with other surfactants to expand the application in tertiary oil recovery and other fields.
