2,2-Diphenyl acetaldehyde was synthesized in three steps from benzophenone and ethyl 2-chloroacetate. First, the intermediate, 3,3- diphenyl -2,3-epoxy ethyl propionate was obtained from benzophenone and ethyl 2-chloroacetate when sodium hydride was used and the reaction temperature was below 20℃. Then the intermediate was hydrolysised with sodium methanolate to form 3,3- diphenyl 2,3-epoxy propionic acid sodium under 20℃. Final 2,2-diphenylacetaldehyde was obtained via decarboxylation and reflux in hydrochloric acid aqueous solution. The total yield was 83.1%.
