In China's recoverable reserves of coal resources, thick coal seams account for a relatively large proportion. However, traditional mining methods can hardly meet the requirements of safety and high efficiency when it comes to the mining of thick coal seams under the conditions of "mining under buildings, railways and water bodies" and other complex geological conditions. This paper proposed a downward slicing unit dense filling mining method for thick coal seams, elaborated on the layout of the production system, the filling mining technology and the roof support mode of this method, and studied the laws of mine pressure behavior and rock stratum movement in the stope during the application of this method through numerical simulation. The simulation results showed that the roof stress in the area after mining and filling within a slice was lower than that of the roof of the unmined coal pillars. As the coal seams were mined layer by layer, the roof underwent continuous subsidence, and the maximum subsidence value appeared at the midpoint of the mining range. The maximum subsidence value increased from 58 mm after the excavation of the first slice to 124 mm after the completion of the mining of all slices, and the increase amplitude decreases layer by layer.
