Abstract：The safety valve, also known as relief valve is a kind of automatic valve that acts without relying on any external energy. It can effectively ensure that the system pressure always stays within the set range, in order to ensure the safe and stable operation of the production device. Taking the example of adding safety valve to the storage tank in the DMF butadiene extraction system, the design and selection process of safety valve was described in detail. According to the specific working conditions, the nature of the released medium and the actual process flow, the design of relief device, the selection of safety valve, the calculation of safety relief volume and the calculation of safety relief area were analyzed and discussed, and the final selection was made by checking the data with the safety valve manufacturer. It provides a reference for the design of safety valve in the future.
