Synthesis and characterization of NaX zeolite based on the oil shale ash

Abstract:The NaX zeolite was synthesized by Huadian oil shale ash using sodium hydroxide alkaline fusion hydrothermal method. The effects of fusion temperature, ash to NaOH ratio, solid to liquid ratio, hydrothermal temperature and crystallization time on the crystallinity of synthesized zeolites were investigated. In addition, the synthesis process of NaX zeolite was determined, and the synthesized zeolite was characterized by nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The results show that the zeolite synthesized by this method is only the NaX zeolite. The synthesis conditions are fusion temperature of 500 ℃, ash to NaOH ratio of 1∶1.5 g/g, solid to liquid ratio of 1∶4 g/mL, hydrothermal temperature of 80 ℃ and crystallization time of 12 h. The specific surface area of the zeolite is up to 355.79 m2/g, about 281 times greater than that of raw shale ash. The pore structure of the NaX zeolite is mainly micropore and mesopore, with the average pore size of 3.60 nm and the pore volume of 0.21 cm3/g.
