Melamine resin was prepared using paraformaldehyde instead of 37% formaldehyde solution. The reaction mechanism and the structural characteristics of the resin were studied,many factors affecting the performances of the resin were discussed. The production process was optimized, the recycling water was used for dissolving paraformaldehyde, and the alcohol phase was took off at reduced prssure, melamine resin was prepared from paraformaldehyde. The restlts showed that free formaldehyde was low, the performances of the melamine resin was equal to or was better than that from 37% formaldehyde solution ,especially the process had the advantages such as energy conservation and environmental protection without wastewater discharge.
