The dryland soil and surface water in a historical abandoned pyrite slag area of Guizhou Province were taken as the research object. Based on the mathematical statistics method, the distribution characteristics of heavy metals in the dryland soil and surface water in the study area were analyzed. The results showed that the pH value of the surface water in the study area was generally low, and the heavy metal elements Cu and Zn exceeded the standard. There is a certain pollution risk of heavy metals Cd, Cu and Ni in the soil of the study area. The pollution rick of Cu > the pollution risk of Cd > the pollution risk of Ni. The excessive points of heavy metals Cu and Zn in surface water are located near the surface water body in the slag heap and the mine tunnel with perennial effluent. The contaminated soil samples are mainly distributed near the abandoned slag heap and the abandoned mine tunnel, which indicates that the abandoned slag heap left over from history and the water body in the abandoned mine tunnel left over from the mining of the deposit have a significant impact on the surrounding and downstream dryland soil and surface water.
