Abstract The electron transfer rate between microorganism and anode in microbial fuel cell ( MFC ) affects the electricity generation performance of MFC; anode modification could effectively improve the electron transfer rate and then enhance the electric property of MFC. The anode modification methods of MFC were reviewed in this paper, including chemical cleaning, electrochemical oxidation, nitrogen modification, acid and heat treatment and surfactant modification. The anode modification materials were also reviewed, including carbon nanomaterials, conductive polymers, metals and their compounds, redox mediators and composites. It is proposed that the anode materials with high conductivity, strong stability, large specific surface area and good biocompatibility should be developed in the future to accelerate the practical application process of MFC.
