Abstract Recent progress in side-chain alkylation of toluene and methanol to styrene at home and abroad was reviewed, including side-chain alkylation reaction mechanism and research status of X zeolite molecular sieves and non-molecular sieve catalysts. The development prospect of this technology was analyzed and some key problems to be solved were summarized. It is proposed that the technology breaks the situation that the production of raw materials is completely dependent on oil and diversifies the production route of styrene. In the future, composite catalysts should be vigorously developed, and the advantages of different types of acid-base centering are used to improve the performance of the catalyst.
