Abstract: The mining conditions of working face under goaf of Tangshangou Mine were studied. The goaf coal pillar size of the fully mechanized mining face in the close distance coal seam was calculated by the plastic zone formula calculated by Mohr-Coulomb criterion on the side of the goaf and the side of the roadway. the width of coal pillar was 14.23 m. The variation law of surrounding rock stress and failure field distribution with coal pillar width is obtained using UDEC2d numerical software. Results showed that the stress concentration of coal pillar increased sharply when the width of coal pillar exceeded 14m, and the stress distribution of surrounding rock varied with the width of coal pillar, the plastic zone on both sides of elastic core separated obviously when the length of elastic core exceeded 15m, and the optimal width of coal pillar was finally determined to be 15m. The research results could provide reference for coal pillar setting in other similar working face.
