Abstract Aiming at the problem of roadway surrounding rock deformation during the mining of No.9 + 10 coal seam in Majunyu Mine, small coal pillar gob-side entry driving was adopted. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the reasonable parameters of roof cutting in gob-side entry driving and the optimal coal pillar width were determined to be 5 m. The field application results showed that after leaving 5 m small coal pillar, the variation of solid coal side and roof subsidence were reduced, and the roof cutting was lower than that of non-roof cutting side, and the effect was good. This study provided a reference for the technology of small coal pillar gob-side entry driving under similar conditions.
