Abstract The study on small coal pillar retaining was carried out in the fully mechanized caving working face of extra-thick seam in Wajinwan Mine, and it was determined that the width of coal pillars along the gob side of 8102 goaf was 8m. Practical results showed that the small coal pillar retention technology had the effect of effectively improving the stress concentration of the roadway along the goaf, making the roadway in a low-stress area, effectively avoiding the roadway deformation, roof fall, and floor heave problems caused by the appearance of underground pressure, and the technology avoided The loss of coal resources caused by wide coal pillars.
