Abstract The reasonable width of small coal pillar is the key to the realization of small coal pillar mining technology. No.15202 Face was taken as the research object and the reasonable width of coal pillar was studied by means of borehole peeping, coal and rock physical and mechanical test, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The results showed that when the width of coal pillar was 6 m, the horizontal peak value of vertical stress was low, the influence degree of upper sidewall was low, and the influence range of maximum horizontal stress of floor was small. Finally, the reasonable width of coal pillar was determined to be 6 m.
