| Thermodynamic analysis of benzene and methanol alkylation reaction system |

Abstract Thermodynamic analysis to Gibbs energy changes, enthalpies and equilibrium constants of various reactions occurred during alkylation of benzene and methanol was conducted based on the outlet product distribution of reactors.The results show that benzene and methanol alkylation reactions proceed spontaneously and are irreversibly exothermic at 633 ~773 K, while further alkylation reactions are complex and multiple. The thermodynamic trends for side reactions of methanol to olefins and aromatics (MTO/MTA) are much stronger than that of alkylation reactions, and most of these side reactions give off considerable heat. The Gibbs energy changes for reactions of benzene/toluene with olefins increases with temperature rising and then turns to positive, indicating that higher temperature helps inhibit these side reactions.
