Abstract In order to provide the theory basis for planting, processing, formulas and technics of tobacco and research the harm of heavy metals in cigarettes to human body, the contents of heavy metal elements in different brands of cigarettes were determined. Using ashing method to treat the samples, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to determine Ca, Zn, Cu, Cd, Hg, Mn, Ni and Pb in six different bands of cigarettes. The results show that the order of element concentration from high to low is Mn, Ca, Cu, Cd, Zn, Ni and Hg , the contents of the heavy metal elements is different in different brands of cigarettes, the relative standard deviations range from1.1% to 2.6%,and the recovery rates are from 91.0% to 108.7%.The method is rapid, accurate, simple and acceptable in determination of the contents of heavy metal elements in cigarettes.
