Abstract The 180-million-ton/year ethylene glycol project of Yulin Chemical Company produces about 23,000 tons of heavy dibasic alcohol as a byproduct per year. The heavy dibasic alcohol have low selling prices and limited industrial applications. In order to improve the utilization value of heavy dibasic alcohol in the waste liquid produced from coal to ethylene glycol, it is necessary to do a good job in the recycling and utilization of waste liquid. The different treatment methods, namely activated carbon adsorption, distillation, silica gel adsorption, and alkaline treatment were used to purify and treat the by-product heavy dibasic alcohol. It found that heavy dibasic alcohol has the best effect through distillation. lt can remove impurities and increase the contentof ethylene glycol to about 94%, which greatly improve product quality and product added value, and is in line with thecompany's green development strategy goal of the coal chemical industry.
