Abstract The traditional bolt-mesh-cable support can not effectively control the large deformation and failure of surrounding rock in deep high stress soft rock roadway. In this paper, the numerical model of surrounding rock failure in deep high-stress soft rock roadway was established based on the strong mine pressure in the return airway of No.1606 bottom pumping roadway in Guhanshan Mine. The failure mechanism of surrounding rock in deep high-stress soft rock roadway was explored. The control countermeasures of surrounding rock in deep high-stress soft rock roadway were put forward, and the whole anchor cable reinforcement technology of " short anchor cable fixing side + long anchor cable strong roof " in deep soft rock roadway was put forward. The field engineering practice showed that this technology could significantly improve the support stiffness and strength, improve the mechanical properties of broken surrounding rock within the anchorage range, and effectively control the large deformation of surrounding rock in deep soft rock roadway.
