Abstract In order to solve the problem of surrounding rock control of narrow coal pillar in gob-side entry, the methods of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and engineering application were comprehensively applied to reveal the deformation and instability mechanism of narrow coal pillar in gob-side entry. When the size of coal pillar was small, most of the coal body inside the coal pillar almost entered the residual failure stage, and most of the mining stress was transferred to the coal inside the mining side. When the size of coal pillar was large, the coal pillar of roadway protection showed good bearing performance, which leaded to the decrease of mining stress transferred to the coal wall of mining side. Based on this, it was determined that the cooperative support technology of roof cutting and roadway protection was adopted in No. 110505 track crossheading. After field application, the surrounding rock of the test crossheading was controllable as a whole. Therefore, the stability control of No.110505 track crossheading along goaf roadway was realized.
