Abstract Waterproof coal pillar is an important facility to prevent flooding accidents in coal mines. By sorting out the hydrogeological conditions of Jiuxin Coal Industry, according to the ' Coal Mine Safety Regulations ' and ' Coal Mine Water Prevention and Control Rules ', the waterproof coal pillars setting in the complex area of No.2 mining coal seam hydrological conditions were studied and designed. The setting size of the waterproof coal pillars in the fault, fracture zone, collapse column and goaf water accumulation area was calculated in detail, and the transient electromagnetic detection was carried out in the two mined-out areas with large water accumulation, so as to reduce and eliminate the occurrence of malignant water damage accidents and ensure the safe mining of coal mines.
