Mercury is a common toxic heavy metal in Chinese herbal materials. For the health of consumers, it is particularly important for detecting the content of mercury in Chinese herbal medicine. The content of mercury in five kinds of Chinese herbal medicinal (Chuanxiong, Euphorbia, Horseshoe, Yam, Campanulaceae) in Yunnan Province was determined by microwave digestion-atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The optimum conditions were determined as follows: the fluorescence intensity was 280 V, the lamp current was 25 mA, the acid medium was 5% hydrochloric acid and the concentration of reductant potassium borohydride was 2%. Under the best experimental conditions, a good linear relationship between mercury concentration and atomic fluorescence intensity was measured in the range of 0 ~ 120.0 μg/L, the detection limit is 0.017 μg/L and relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 4.3 %, the recovery rate was 90.2 % ~ 105.1 %. The method was accurate in the determination of mercury in Chinese herbal materials. The content of mercury in the 5 kinds of Chinese herbal medicines did not exceed the national standard.
