In view of the demand for efficient lubrication of coal mine mechanical equipment and the insufficient lubrication performance of existing water-based lubricants under high load, a water-based lubricant based on polydopamine nanoparticles ( PDA NPs ) was prepared in this study. Transmission electron microscopy and Zeta potential characterization showed that PDA-NPs with an average dry particle size of 214 nm were uniformly dispersed in water-based solution and had good stability. The results of four-ball friction test and ball-disc reciprocating friction and wear test show that the load-bearing and anti-wear properties of the lubrication system are significantly improved. The maximum non-seizure load is 44 kg, the steady-state friction coefficient is 0.252, which is 29.9 % lower than that of the unadded system, and the wear volume is reduced by 44.1 %. After the friction test, the content of C, O and N elements on the surface of the friction pair increased significantly, indicating that PDA NPs could form a stable lubricating film during the friction process, reducing the direct contact of the metal and effectively inhibiting the wear.
