Selenium (Se) is a ubiquitous trace element. Selenite[Se(IV)] has the strongest toxicity in its oxidation state and high concentration of selenite can pollute the environment. Among all the treatment methods of selenite, biological reduction is an ideal method because of economy and safety etc.. The mechanism of biological treatment process for reduction of selenite was reviewed, some affecting factors were discussed, such as carbon source, pH, temperature and coexisting ions, and the effects of redox mediator on the biological reduction of selenite were analyzed, thereby supporting a better understanding for the effects of redox mediator on selenite bioreduction process and improving theoretical foundation of the bioreduction process.
