Abstract Aiming at the problem of width setting of protective coal pillar of mining roadway in fully-mechanized mining face of extra-thick coal seam, the vertical stress and distribution law of plastic zone under different widths of coal pillar were studied by numerical simulation with the return airway of No. 6104 Face in Nanyangpo Mine as the engineering background. The results showed that there was no elastic core area when the width of coal pillar was 5 ~ 15 m, and the elastic core area appeared when the width was 20 m, with an average of 7 m. The overall deformation of coal pillar was not large and was in a stable state. When the width of coal pillar was greater than 20 m, the width of elastic core area gradually increased. When the width of coal pillar was 20 ~ 30 m, the vertical stress appeared double peaks, and the peak decreased with the increase of coal pillar size. Considering comprehensively, the optimal width of coal pillar ws 20 m.
