Abstract Emulsion polymerization is an effective way to obtain high molecular weight polymers. Emulsion polymerization of cross-linked polystyrene was carried out with styrene and α-methylstyrene as oil phase, (NH4) 2S2O8 as initiator, 10% polyvinyl alcohol as dispersant and divinylbenzene as crosslinking agent. The better preparation conditions were determined through the single factor test, which are the temperature is 80 ℃, the mass ratio of styrene to α-Methylstyrene is 4∶1 and the dosage of initiator is 0.8%, and the high conversion can be achieved under the above conditons. The polymers were analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which characteristic absorption peaks corresponded to methyl and benzene rings, that indicates the target product was obtained.
