Abstract Based on old empty water burst in coal mine goaf, basic pinciples of waterproof coal pillar were determined combining geological and production conditions, as well as its internal stress distribution characteristics. Rational width of waterproof pillar was 60m through theoretical derivation method. The numerical calculating results showed that this rational width could effectively prevent old water burst, eliminate water hazards and guarantee safety production in coal mine.
