Abstract Coal based ethanol is a byproduct of coal to ethylene glycol chemical industry. By analyzing the physical and chemical properties of coal based ethanol and adding different types of additives, glass cleaning solutions with different concentrations were prepared. According to the national standard"GB/T 23436-2009 Automotive Windshield Glass Cleaning Solution", their performance was tested and found to meet the requirements of the national standard. The content of coal based ethanol is 26%, the content of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (anionic surfactant) is 0.01%~0.02%, the content of Dipropylene glycol butyl ether (nonionic surfactant) is 0.01% ~ 0.02%, sodium bicarbonate is 0.01% ~ 0.02%,glycerol is 0.01% ~ 0.20%, sodium dihydrogen phosphate is 0.10% ~ 0.50%, ethylene glycol is 0.25% ~ 0.50%, and the balance is water. Making coal based ethanol the main formulation of a new type of glass cleaning solution has improved the utilization rate and added value of coal based ethanol as a chemical byproduct.
