Abstract Aiming at the difficult problem of supporting large cross-section roadway under rapid excavation in a coal mine, No.1010 return air drift of No.1 Coal Mine Huangling Mining Co., Ltd. was taken as the research object, the deformation and failure characteristics of large cross-section roadway are analyzed by method of combining numerical simulation and theoretical calculation, and the roadway support scheme was given and the stability was verified. The results showed that under the condition of unsupported large-section roadway, the area of large deformation of surrounding rock was large, the shear stress was concentrated at the shoulder and bottom corners, and the plastic failure range was large. According to the limit equilibrium theory and numerical simulation results, the support method of left-handed screw steel bolt, metal mesh, metal beam, and anchor cable was adopted. After the support, the roadway bolt and cable effectively prevented the deformation and damage of the rock stratum, controlled the roof subsidence, limited the deformation of the two sides, prevented the occurrence of floor heave, and provided a guarantee for safe and efficient mining of the mine.
