Abstract Based Oxygen-containing anions such as carbon, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, fluorion and alkaline earth metal ions easily lead to water hardening. In order to avoid or slow down the scaling and blocking of equipment and pipelines in application, scale inhibitors are often added to water bodies. Polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) is a typical phosphorus free, sulfur free and nitrogen free biodegradable green corrosion inhibitor with excellent scale inhibition performance. The development and implementation of anti-corrosion and scale removal products meet the requirements of environmental protection and energy conservation. In this paper, the preparation methods of polyepoxysuccinic acid are briefly introduced, and the recent progress in the direct application of polyepoxysuccinic acid and its modification, copolymerization and compounding to improve the anti-corrosion and descaling performance of products are reviewed. The process development of PESA treatment agent has a broad market prospect in oilfield exploitation, industrial production circulating cooling system and detergent additives.
