Abstract Collapse column was a major hidden danger of coal mine water disaster in North China type coalfield, which was always been the focus of prevention and control of coal mine water disaster. The collapse column XLZ5 of Madaotou Mine in Datong Coalfield was a large-sized water abundance collapse column. In the case of retaining the water-proof coal pillar of the collapse column, the water still flowed out during the excavating roadway process, so the collapse column had water outburst risk. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the collapse column, the water discharge of the water exploration and drainage hole and the mining conditions under pressure, a comprehensive control scheme for the collapse column was proposed, which was only partially treated in the water-proof coal ( rock ) column of the collapse column. The scheme included three parts : geophysical prospecting and fine drilling exploration, local drainage and depressurization of collapse column, rapid grouting and supplementary grouting of chemical slurry. The collapse column control project provided a successful case of only partially treating large-sized water-bearing collapse columns for the collapse column water disaster prevention and control technology.
