Abstract The method detection limit and determination limit of the total petroleum hydrocarbon（C10 ~ C40）in soil was determined and verified by gas chromatography， and its method and steps， that could be applied for the method detection limit and determination limit analysis of other kinds analytes, were described in detail. The results showed that the method detection limit and determination limit of the total petroleum hydrocarbon（C10 ~ C40）in soil was 2.97 mg/kg and 11.9 mg/kg respectively on the conditions of 10.0 g soil sample be pretreated 1.0 mL solution and injection volume of 1.0μL. Both results were less than the standard value, verified the feasibility of this method.
