Abstract Organic carbon ( TOC ) is an important basic index of shale gas exploration and development. It is very important to accurately determine the organic carbon content during shale gas developing process. Shale of total organic carbon( TOC ) was settled by applying LECO CS230 infrared carbon-sulfur analyzer. High purity sucrose was used to establish the calibration curve. And the problems of the wide range of organic carbon content in the shale was solved. The results showed that the detection limit of 0.2 mg/L for TOC concentration in the range 0.14%~28.07% shale samples were analyzed, the relative standard deviation of 0.46%~2.58%. This method is simple, rapid, with low cost and good sensitivity, can meet the monitoring requirements in shale TOC.
