Abstract Light calcium carbonate is widely used, whiteness is an important index to measure the quality of PCC, and improving the whiteness of PCC can meet the technical needs of some industries. The whiteness of PCC is reduced due to impurities, measures such as controlling the quality of raw materials, reducing the content of soot gas, purifying the kiln gas of lime kiln and optimizing the production environment were taken to achieve the whitening effect. The research progress of whitening PCC by physical and chemical methods in recent years at home and abroad was reviewed. The chemical method is superior to the physical method, and the whitening effect is obvious, which is the main research direction. It is suggested that the methods of microbial iron removal, flotation and magnetic seed separation can be applied to the process of impurity removal and whitening of PCC through further exploration.
