Abstract Taking DSJ160/350/3×500 coal mine belt conveyor as the research object, the structure of automatic tensioning device is designed. The overall structure scheme of the automatic tensioning device is introduced, and the wire rope, tensioning drum, motor and tension sensor are selected and calculated. The designed automatic tensioning device is applied to the engineering practice of belt conveyor, which shows that the device has good operation effect. The belt tensioning response time and equipment amplitude are reduced by 12% and 20% respectively compared with the original automatic tensioning device, which provides a guarantee for the safe and reliable operation of belt conveyor.
