Abstract Water accumulation in old goaf is one of the main water damage which threaten the safety of coal mine production. Water accumulation in old goaf is like an underground reservoir. If water outburst occurs, a large amount of water and coal mud will gush out in a short time, which is extremely destructive and will cause economic losses and even casualties. In order to relieve the threat of old goaf water damage, it is necessary to use drilling methods for drainage. Drilling rig transportation, opening, inclinometer, drainage and other processes require a lot of manpower, material and financial resources, and seriously restrict the production connection of working face. In order to reduce the cost and ensure the production connection, the advanced reserved drainage hole method is proposed, and the leakage hole is constructed in advance to drain the old goaf water by using the spatial relationship of the roadway. The results show that the reserved drainage hole method can effectively avoid or reduce the formation of water accumulation space after mining in the working face, and minimize and reduce the influence of old goaf water damage.
