Abstract Taking the driving drum shell of DSJ80 / 40 belt conveyor in Xinzhi Mine as the research object, the strength analysis was carried out, and the finite element simulation pretreatment, analysis and calculation and results analysis were carried out. The results show that the design strength of the drum shell is conservative, which is much higher than the actual use requirements. Therefore, the thickness of the drum shell is optimized and reduced by 6 mm. The simulation results show that the improved shell strength and stiffness can meet the requirements and reduce the shell weight.
