| Study on failure characteristics of coal body and overburden movement of partial filling mining face |

Abstract To study the coal failure characteristics and strata movement under partial backfill mining, a numerical model is developed using the PHASE 2D finite element software based on the geological conditions of a coal mine. The abutment pressure distribution ahead of the face, the development of failure zone on longwall face, deflection of the immediate roof and the overburden movement are analyzed in this paper. The results show that: prior to the decline in the abutment pressure, it increases first. The abutment stress decreases to the stabilized level at last. The maximum abutment pressure coefficient reaches 1.8; the failure zone of the face increases with the advance of the longwall face, and stabilizes at around 2 m; the deflection of the immediate roof is small ahead of the face, and is relatively large behind the face. The maximum deflection is about 22 mm in the open face area; the vertical displacement of the strata increases with the face advance and maximizes at 66 mm.
