Abstract In the process of coal mining, water-rich mining void areas are difficult to determine their spatial location due to their complex distribution patterns. To address this problem, the 2117 working face of Laomupo Mine was taken as example, and effectively a water-rich mining space near the face by using a transient electromagnetic advance sounding method was adopted. The results showed that the transient electromagnetic method had a good application in detecting water-rich underground mining void areas.
