Abstract

Pentabromodiphenyl ethers (Penta-BDEs) have been listed in emerging persistent organic pollutants. BDE-99 and BDE-100, as typical representatives of pentabromodiphenyl ethers, are ubiquitous in environment. The rules and route of their photochemical degradation in different solvents and different light sources are studied by gas chromatograph (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). The results show that the solvents can affect the degradation rate, and the hydrogen donor capacity of the solvent is the main factor of affecting the degradation rate, and the degradation rate sequence is n-hexane > methanol > toluene > acetone. The degradation rate of two pentabromodiphenyl ethers in different solvent is BDE-99 > BDE-100. In n-hexane, the degradation products of BDE-99 are more abundant than BDE-100, the degradation products are mainly some low brominated diphenyl ethers and cyclized to dibromodibenzofuran and dibenzofuran.
