Abstract The molecular structure of benzoic acid was studied by infrared spectroscopy ( including one-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and second derivative infrared spectroscopy ) in a frequency range of 4 000 ~ 400 cm-1. It was found that the spectrum resolution of one-dimensional infrared spectroscopy was better than the second derivative infrared spectroscopy. This study shows the important role of infrared spectroscopy in studying the molecular structure of benzoic acid.
