Abstract The Sri Lanka natural ruby (abbreviation ruby) structure had been studied by fourier transform diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy. The Al-O stretch vibration mode (νAl-O-Ruby) was found also. The band resulting from the νAl-O appeared near 472(νAl-O-1-Ruby), 468(νAl-O-2-Ruby), 462 (νAl-O-3-Ruby), 426(νAl-O-4-Ruby), 420 (νAl-O-5-Ruby), 418(νAl-O-6-Ruby), 414 (νAl-O-7-Ruby), 410(νAl-O-8-Ruby) and 408 cm-1(νAl-O-9-Ruby). Diffuse reflectance two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy of ruby νAl-O-Ruby bands were studied to determine the sequence of νAl-O-Ruby absorption peak also. The study demonstrates the key roles of diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy in the analysis of identification and structure research of the ruby.
