Abstract This study relied on a mining project in a field in North China. The project area was 5.6 km2, and the main mining No.3 coal seam was highly gassy and the hydrogeology was relatively complex. In view of the great threat of gas and water disasters, this study aimed to explore the impact of collaborative optimization of gas extraction and water prevention and control safety management on the continuous balance of mining and excavation. By analyzing the current situation and expounding the theory, collaborative measures including drilling layout optimization and pumping system linkage were proposed and implemented. The results showed that after collaborative optimization, the minimum value of gas extraction was increased by 47.1 %, the gas concentration and pressure were reduced, the maximum value of mine water inflow was reduced to 102 m3/d, and the fluctuation range was narrowed. This showed that collaborative optimization could effectively improve the level of coal mine safety production, ensure the smooth connection of mining and excavation, and provide an important reference for the coal industry.
