Abstract Aiming at the problem that the stress distribution changes after the end of the mining face in Dashe Mine and the risk of coal seam outburst in the pressure relief area, the gas content W of the coal seam and the desorption index Δh2 of the drilling cuttings were measured by sampling, and the gas content and pressure characteristics were analyzed. Combined with the width of the protective coal pillar and the heading face, the pressure relief range formed by the edge of the goaf after the destruction of the gas pressure balance of the coal body was studied. The application results showed that the effective range of the pressure relief protection of the adjacent section after the mining of No.92623 Face was 15 m from the normal line of the solid coal measurement at the edge of the goaf. Under the premise of retaining the safety coal pillar with smaller width and reasonable support, the safety and reliability of the driving along the goaf were ensured.
