Abstract The technology of gob-side entry retaining has matured and is continuously used in the working faces of No.2 and No.3 coal seams in Laomupo Coal Industry. In 2020, Laomupo Coal Industry will mine No.5 coal seam of Taiyuan Formation. Compared with No.2 coal seam and No.3 coal seam, the roof and floor strata of No.5 coal seam have low strength and are relatively broken, which brings challenges to the application of gob-side entry retaining. In order to continue this advanced technology, grouting, roof cutting and pressure relief, increasing the stroke of composite iron shoes, increasing iron shoes, etc. were adopted. The application made the gob-side entry retaining successfully implemented under the condition of soft rock roof and floor, which provided important reference for the application of gob-side entry retaining under similar geological conditions.
