Abstract In order to study the influence of loading rate on the failure characteristics of sandstone with filling fissures, the discrete element method was used to analyze the variation of tensile and shear crack number and crack development and expansion law of sandstone with filling fissures under different loading rates. The results showed that the failure of the specimen was dominated by tensile cracks, and the number of cracks in the specimen was positively correlated with the loading rate. During the loading process, the stress first reached the contact fracture threshold of the filling fracture particles, and the initial crack developed in the filling fracture with weak attributes. The difference in the failure characteristics of the specimens at different loading rates was mainly the direction of crack propagation at the time of adjacent failure. As the loading rate increased, the direction of crack development gradually paralleled the direction of filling cracks.
