Abstract With the gradual reduction of shallow coal seam resources, the deep coal seam mining became the first choice of each major coal mines. In the past, the drilling geological hole work mainly focused on shallow coal seam, while the exploration of deep coal seam was relatively little. In order to explore the deep coal seam or control the deep structure, it was necessary to pass through the goaf of the shallow coal seam, and the goaf became a construction difficulty which affected the drilling hole engineering. At present, the main methods of passing through the goaf were plugging and isolation. It cost a lot of manpower, material resources and time to plug the goaf by using cement and gravel, etc. The effect was relatively poor. It also wasted a certain amount of pipe material to isolate goaf by using conventional casing pipe. The isolating goaf technique by flying pipe only needed casing pipe running in the broken section of goaf, which could reduce the cost of casing pipe, especially in the horizontal branch hole. The technique could reduce unnecessary pipe drawing link in the late stage.
