Abstract Fly ash is a solid waste formed by coal burning at high temperature. Fly ash has been widely used in building materials, concrete, agriculture and environmental protection materials. In order to understand the application of fly ash in coal mines, the application of fly ash in closed filling, colloidal fire-extinguishing materials, roadside filling, goaf filling, roadway support and so on was studied. The experimental and field application results showed that fly ash played a very good role in improving the sealing filling, the performance of fire-extinguishing materials, filling strength and filling, roadway support and reducing material cost. There were still some technical problems that needed to be solved in the above applications, especially in the filling of goafs.
