Abstract Based on the interrupt of electromagnetic speed control coal cutter electric control system because of the impulse voltage during EMC test, a two-class surge protection device is designed according to the characteristics of varistor and transient voltage suppressor by analyzing the voltage amplitude, energy, interference manners and protection methods of surge. A decoupling part is added between these two classes to delay the response time of the second class and to make them coordinate better. After the simulation and field test, good performance is achieved. The peak of 1.2/50μs surge is 2 kV and can be depressed at 24 V. The result shows that this device is feasible and can ensure the electric control system to work safe and stable in underground environment.
