Abstract The preparation methods of ionic liquids were introduced, and the research progress of the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids such as [Bmim]C1, [Bmim]OAc, [Emim]OAc, [Hemim]Cl, [Amim]Cl was summarized. The effects of temperature and pressure etc. on the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquid were expounded, and the dissolution mechanism and characteristic were discussed. It is pointed out that the research on ionic liquid as a new solvent to dissolve cellulose is still in its infancy, the dissolving mechanism and the problems about physicochemistry remain to be further studied. With the further study of mechanism of function ionic liquid to dissolve cellulose, ionic liquid as green solvents to dissolve cellulose will bring more broad prospects for the development of new high-quality cellulose products .
